Review: Brightburn

Courtesy of Sony Pictures Releasing By Daniel Andrade With the summer movie season fast approaching, it’s become almost inevitable at this point to expect to see a blockbuster superhero movie on the big screen. Since Marvel began their ambitious cinematic universe 11 years ago, we’ve gotten accustomed to seeing some of our favorite heroes come to life with epic fight scenes, fun interactions with some charismatic characters, and a happy ending to make us feel better as we walk out the theater. But maybe that’s the problem: these movies have become too  predictable . Don’t get me wrong, I will still go and see all of them and have a great time doing so, but I will generally know exactly what I’m getting myself into. But then along comes  Brightburn . This movie takes those beats that you’ve come to expect in any other traditional superhero movie and flips them on their heads. You’re not watching the origins of a new hero, here to save the world and fight for the good of humanity

Review: Aladdin

Courtesy of Disney By Daniel Andrade I must start this review with a confession: the animated Aladdin movie is easily my favorite Disney film of all time. I grew up on that film, watching it constantly and repeatedly throughout my childhood, so much so that I could practically quote the entire film. Maybe it was because there was a brown character screen that I could relate to. Maybe it was the unforgettable songs that I would hum or sing aloud long after the film had ended. Maybe it was Robin William’s iconic performance as the genie. Whatever the reason, Aladdin was, and remains to this day, my favorite Disney movie, and easily one of my Top 5 movies in general. So when I saw that they were remaking it in live action, I was in a weird position. On the one hand, seeing this movie come to life in a way I would’ve never imagined was exciting for me, there was a lot of potential. But on the other hand, this is a movie that is so important to me and holds such a pivotal role in

Review: Detective Pikachu

Courtesy of Warner Bros. By Daniel Andrade One of the first video game systems I ever owned was a Nintendo Game Boy, and I got three games to start off my dive into the world of video games: Tetris, Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins, and Pokémon Blue. And while I certainly had fun playing each of those games, only one really absorbed all my time and energy during countless car rides and late nights, and that was Pokémon. Suffice to say, I’ve been a fan ever since and have played almost every iteration of the game since then, and of course you know I was a fan of the original anime show as well! I collected the cards, I knew the Pok é Rap, I knew the names of all of the original 151 Pokémon, I even saw the first few animated movies in theaters. I grew up on Pokémon, so when I saw that a live-action Pokémon movie was coming, a wave of nostalgia rushed over me and I knew I had to see it.             Pokémon Detective Pikachu is based off of a spin-off video game of the s
