Mortal Kombat: Movie Review

By Kevin Miller (Image Courtesy of Warner Bros.) In a world where Covid-19 limits our ability to watch the latest blockbusters in theaters, everything that is released on demand or on streaming devices during this time has a great responsibility to deliver. But what are they delivering? Escape. Escape from the four walls we've been isolated within for more than a year. Escape from the uncertainties the virus brings. Escape from the lack of social interactions. The stories we watch, the characters we encounter become a second family to help us through this anxious time that has already taken so much. So far Warner Bros. has delivered again and again during this time with some misses like WW84  but after a great come back with " The Snyder Cut " and Godzilla vs. Kong , it seemed like there was hope for the studio to do it yet again, but alas Mortal Kombat was another miss. Here's why... I don't really like to kick a horse when it's down, so I'll just get

Godzilla vs. Kong: Movie Review

(Image courtesy of Legendary Pictures) By Kevin Miller SPOILER FREE - I love monster movies! Give me anything with monsters and I'm in. What I don't love so much is the 'vs genre', mainly because there's a lack of story and a lot of plot holes. This is the common symptom of the genre due to the whole objective: get these two rivals to fight each other. I'm not the kind of person who enjoys turning my brain off in order to enjoy something either, which is what 'vs' movies tend to require. The only 'vs' movie I really liked was Batman v Superman: Ultimate Edition . Everything else, not so much. So you can imagine how "excited" I was to watch Godzilla vs. Kong. Much to my surprise, I did enjoy it. It was a fun movie, I'm not sure if I was supposed to laugh at the drama of it all like when the titans would look at each other, or as they saw the end coming, they would do this dramatic slow turn, over the shoulder but I genuinely enjoyed

Zack Snyder's Justice League: Movie Review

(Image Courtesy of HBO Max) By Kevin Miller SPOILER FREE - As a superhero fan, the original theatrical cut was something I was excited for but unfortunately it didn’t meet my expectations. I did give it the good ol’ college try. In fact, I think I tried too hard to like it but just couldn’t. So once rumors started circulating that a mysterious Snyder cut was in the realm of possibilities, I was definitely hopeful but not holding my breath. I have a love/hate relationship with Zack Snyder ’s films. Despite the majority of my male friends loving (and I mean LOVING) 300 , I hated it. I hated the color grading, the overused slow-motion bits and the toxic imagery of what it meant to be a real “man”. Of course, I’m a skinny guy who wears glasses and lives vicariously through graphic novels and video games but I also wasn’t a big fan of Sucker Punch for similar reasons. I could go on but I have another review to write after this. (Image Courtesy of HBO Max) Although those reasons are also th

Batwoman: TV Review

(Image Courtesy of CW) By Kevin Miller SPOILER FREE - Ok, before we begin let me just say that I am not claiming this show is the best. The writing is questionable and some of the acting is a bit cringe-worthy at times but it’s not as bad as the reputation it has. I really like what the show is trying to do with the topics it tends to focus on like child abuse, racial discrimination, mental health, the foster system and LGBTQ+ rights. I get the sense that the majority of the show's reviews focus on everything the show is not, and not enough on what the show actually is. It's a superhero show and not a superhero show with the targeted demographic that Netflix 's Daredevil and Punisher have. It's not written and directed by Christopher Nolan or Zack Snyder , it's made for television with children and teens in mind. Wanting it to be darker, more serious and mature than what it was intended to be, doesn't make it a bad show. It's very true to its television ra
