While last year was mostly garbage, there were many blasts from the past to satisfy our need for nostalgia! In this upcoming year, the hope is that things will be a little different and that we’ll be able to take what we learned in 2020 and apply it to our everyday lives once we’re able to roam free again. Here’s hoping!
So with that in mind, let’s take a look back at the biggest 90’s trends that are seriously making a comeback!
90’s Curtains Are Back!

Although some might have moved on from the extra-long, unkempt styles we were collectively forced to adopt during lockdown, many of us have grown quite attached to our longer locks. This means that this year will see a host of middle-length styles, from floppy to the infamous 90’s curtains – think Leonardo DiCaprio from Titanic, Nick Carter from Backstreet Boys, or, most recently, Jungkook from BTS (pictured above). This trend is all about looking natural. It shouldn’t look greasy or overly saturated with products.

Make Way for Grunge Hair

Grunge Hair can be defined as a messy, untamed (and possibly unwashed) mane with lots of volume and a rebellious personality. It can also include colorful and/or bleached dye-jobs, but the idea is to allow it to be free and let your hair’s natural texture take over, very much like Monroe Hayden displayed recently (pictured above). This is what happens when you allow your curtains to grow and was shown off perfectly by 90s icons like Kurt Cobain from Nirvana and Brad Pitt (pictured below).

Grunge Is In Again!

The Grunge look didn’t just stop with hair; it embodied an entire style from head to toe. 2020 offered very few opportunities to get dressed up since barely anything was open to dress up for. Expect a surge in grunge in 2021 from those who mastered the art of dressing down. This means anything from leather jackets, ripped jeans, plaid shirts, horizontal stripes, and black boots - just look at Angel New (pictured above). All of it is coming back. Of course, this can be viewed as a classic look for many (as exemplified by Winona Ryder and Johnny Depp below), but expect even the most cleaned up of folks to partake in this style.

The 90’s Ponytail Is Also Back
Although it’s pretty safe to say that we saw this coming, thanks to pop icons like Ariana Grande and Kylie Jenner, the 90’s ponytail is making a comeback. Unlike the wild and unrestrained attitude of Grunge Hair, the 90’s ponytail is the exact opposite. It added a sense of youthful playfulness to all who sported it, as shown by Britney Spears and Tyra Banks (pictured below). It’s often described as the perfect ponytail for a reason. Lots of hair spray is required to achieve this look; just ask Shay Mitchell (pictured above).

90’s Movies and Shows Are Also Being Watched More
With all this time in lockdown, folks have caught up on their recent shows and are now venturing back to the past to either rewatch an old fav or watch one of the following films or shows for the first time. Movies like Titanic, 10 Things I Hate About You, Tim Burton’s Batman films, Edward Scissorhands, Forrest Gump, and Home Alone are some of the most popular films being streamed right now. Shows like Friends, Buffy the Vampire Slayer, ER, Dinosaurs, Rugrats, and Are You Afraid of the Dark are among the most popular series that were streamed within the past year. In a time of uncertainty and fear, classic films and shows can either bring you a sense of comfort from watching something you know so well or can bring you a sense of joy from witnessing what life was like back in simpler times.
2020 was a year that most of us don’t want to remember or relive ever again. Maybe this is why there was such a hard push for nostalgia, which will probably bring back some trends and styles that we thought were long gone. Here’s to a hopeful and prosperous new year! See you all in 2021!
